Private Tours Tangier

Africa is 14 km from Europe at the narrowest point of the Strait, and you can stand in the Tangier medina an hour after leaving Spain. Whether that makes a good day depends almost entirely on which Spanish city you start from and which port you sail into.

I meet guests off the Tarifa ferry most days of the week, and the ones who have a good day in Tangier have almost always made the same two decisions. They crossed from Tarifa, and they did not try to squeeze a second city into the same day. The ones who had a stressful day usually sailed from Algeciras, or drove down from Seville that morning with no margin.

Here is how the day works from each starting point.

How a Day Trip to Morocco from Spain Actually Works

There is only one realistic day trip destination, and that is Tangier. Chefchaouen, Tetouan and Asilah are all wonderful, but each adds hours of driving on the Moroccan side, which turns a relaxed day into a race against the last ferry.

The key choice is the port. Two Spanish ports have regular ferries to Tangier, and they arrive in very different places.

RouteCrossingArrives atFor a day trip
Tarifa to Tanger VilleAbout 1 hourThe city port, walking distance from the medinaYes, this is the one
Algeciras to Tanger MedAbout 1.5 hoursA freight port roughly 45 km east of the cityNo, you lose two hours getting into town and back
The mistake I see most

Booking the cheaper Algeciras sailing without noticing it goes to Tanger Med, not Tangier. On a day trip, the saving disappears in taxi fares and lost time.

Several companies run the Tarifa crossing, with up to a dozen sailings a day in season and fares from around 40 euros each way. You can compare them on Ferryhopper, and my full guide to the ferry from Spain covers the booking details.

From Seville, Malaga, Gibraltar or Tarifa

Tarifa at dawn. Every good Spain to Morocco day trip starts from this quay.

From TarifaThe easy one. Walk to the port, take a morning sailing, and you have a full day in Tangier. If you are staying on the Costa de la Luz, this is the trip to do.
From GibraltarCross into La Linea and it is roughly 45 minutes by road to Tarifa, plus however long the border queue takes. Very doable, but leave early.
From MalagaAbout two hours by road to Tarifa. Possible in a day, but it is a long one. Leave by 6:30am or sleep in Tarifa the night before.
From SevilleAround two and a half hours to Tarifa. As a same day return, honestly tiring. A night in Tarifa either side makes it a pleasure instead of an ordeal.

My straight advice: if you are coming from Malaga or Seville, the single best thing you can do for this trip is to stay one night in Tarifa first. You catch the early ferry fresh, and the day in Morocco stops being mostly motorway.

The Clock Changes When You Land

Morocco runs one hour behind Spain for most of the summer. In winter the two often match, and during Ramadan Morocco drops back an hour. Your phone will switch automatically when it picks up a Moroccan network, which is useful until you need to read your ferry ticket.

Return tickets are printed in local time. A 6pm sailing from Tangier means 6pm Moroccan time. Check which clock you are looking at before you relax over a last mint tea.

What You Can See in One Day

A well paced day in Tangier covers more than people expect, because the city’s highlights sit close together and the coast is only 14 km away. Here is how a typical day runs from the Tarifa ferry:

9:00Ferry lands at Tanger Ville. Passport checks are often done on board during the crossing.
9:30Drive along the coast to Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
10:30Hercules Caves, then a short camel ride on the Atlantic beach.
12:30Back through the villa quarters to the Kasbah and the view over the Strait.
13:30Lunch in the medina.
15:00Medina on foot: the souks, the Petit Socco, the American Legation.
17:00Walk down to the port for the return sailing.

You can do the medina half of that on your own. The coast half needs a vehicle, which is where most independent day trippers end up haggling with a taxi at the port gate.

Going Alone or With a Guide

Going alone is perfectly possible. Tangier is safe, the medina is compact, and the port is a short walk from the old town. The two honest downsides are the touts at the port exit, who are persistent rather than dangerous, and the fact that you will only really see the medina.

A private guide is worth it when you want the coast and the old town in one day without negotiating anything, and when you would rather not spend the morning working out ferry timetables. The tour below includes the ferry tickets, so the whole day is planned around the sailings.

  • Bring your passport. EU, UK, US and Canadian citizens do not need a visa for a short visit. An ID card is not enough
  • Do not bring a Spanish rental car. Most rental agreements do not allow it, and you do not need a car in Tangier
  • Carry some cash. Euros are widely accepted, but small dirhams help with taxis and tips
  • Dress for walking. The medina is steep and cobbled, and shoulders covered is more comfortable in the old town
  • Book the return sailing. Summer afternoons fill up, and the last boat is not the one to gamble on

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a day trip to Morocco from Spain worth it?

Yes, if you do it through Tarifa and keep the day to Tangier. The ferry takes about an hour and lands in the city, so you get six or seven hours on the ground, enough for the medina, the Kasbah and the Atlantic coast.

What is the closest city in Spain to Morocco?

Tarifa. It sits at the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar, about 14 km from the African coast, and its ferries go straight to Tanger Ville port in central Tangier.

Can you do a day trip to Morocco from Malaga or Seville?

You can, but it is a long day. Tarifa is about two hours from Malaga and two and a half from Seville by road, so you are driving four to five hours on top of the crossing. A night in Tarifa beforehand makes the trip far more enjoyable.

Do I need a visa for a day trip to Tangier?

Citizens of the EU, UK, US and Canada do not need a visa for short stays in Morocco. You do need a valid passport, and passport control is usually handled on board the ferry.

Which ferry should I take from Spain to Tangier for a day trip?

Take a Tarifa sailing to Tanger Ville. Ferries from Algeciras go to Tanger Med, a port about 45 km outside the city, which costs you around two hours of extra travel on a day trip.
