There is no single best tour in Tangier. There is the best one for the time you have, the part of the city you care about, and whether you want to walk or ride. Here is every type compared honestly, including the ones I do not run.

As a Tangier tour guide, I get asked “which tour should we do?” several times a day. My answer always starts with the same question: do you only want the old town, or the Atlantic coast as well? The medina is walkable. Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves are 14 km away and need a vehicle. That one choice decides most of the rest.

Which One Should You Choose?

Cap Spartel. If you want this view, you need a tour with a vehicle.
Private, Group or Free Walking Tour?
Tangier also has group tours sold on booking platforms and tip based “free” walking tours. Here is the honest comparison:
- Private tour: just your group, your pace, your interests. Costs more per person than a large group, and nobody else approaches you on the way.
- Group tour: cheaper, fixed route, often a larger group. Fine if you are happy to follow the crowd.
- Tip based walking tour: good value for a quick orientation. Check the guide is licensed, and expect a tip to be requested at the end.
The unplanned “tour” offered by a stranger at the port or the Petit Socco. It usually ends in shops. My guide on spotting a licensed guide explains why.

Frequently Asked Questions
For most first time visitors, a full day tour that combines the Atlantic coast, Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves in the morning with the medina and Kasbah on foot in the afternoon. With only half a day, a private walking tour of the medina is the best choice.
Three to four hours covers the medina and Kasbah. Six to eight hours lets you add the coast and the caves. Day trips to Chefchaouen, Tetouan or Asilah also take six to eight hours.
Less than many expect. A private walking tour starts from 40 euros per person and a full day with a car and driver from 75 euros.
No. The caves are about 14 km from the medina and need a vehicle. Choose the panoramic, full day or shore excursion tour to include them.
Yes, especially on cruise days and in summer. Booking ahead also fixes the price and avoids negotiating with unlicensed guides on arrival.
