One day is enough to see Tangier itself. Two days let you add a second town. Three days is the sweet spot, because it gives you Chefchaouen without rushing anything. Here is exactly how I would spend each version.
See the Full Day Tour
As a Tangier tour guide, I plan trips of every length, from four hours off a cruise ship to a week across the north. The city is compact, the coast is close, and three very different towns sit within about two and a half hours. That makes the answer depend less on Tangier and more on how much of the north you want to see.
How Many Days in Tangier Do You Need?
One Day in Tangier
This is essentially the full day tour. For the Kasbah in more detail, read my guide to the Tangier Kasbah.
Two Days: Add Asilah or Tetouan

Asilah, 45 minutes down the Atlantic coast. Quiet, whitewashed and covered in murals.
Keep day one as above, then choose your second day by mood:
- Asilah for a slow, sunny day by the ocean. A small whitewashed medina full of murals, the Portuguese ramparts and fresh fish for lunch. About 45 minutes away.
- Tetouan for history and craft. A UNESCO listed medina built by refugees from Granada, and a Spanish colonial new town. About an hour away. See my guide to getting from Tangier to Tetouan.
Three Days: Add Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is two and a half hours away. It deserves a full day, or a night.
Day three goes to Chefchaouen, the blue town in the Rif Mountains. It is about two and a half hours each way, so leave early. If you can, stay the night and see the medina at 7am before anyone else arrives. My guide to getting from Tangier to Chefchaouen compares every option.
Try to fit Chefchaouen and Tetouan into the same day, or Chefchaouen into a one day visit to Tangier. You end up seeing mostly the inside of a car.
Planning Tips
- Sleep in or near the medina so you can walk everywhere on day one
- Do the coast in the morning and the medina in the afternoon, when the day trippers have gone
- Save Friday midday for the coast. Many medina shops close for prayers
- Arriving by ferry from Spain? Remember the clock. Morocco is often an hour behind

Frequently Asked Questions
One full day covers Tangier itself: the medina, the Kasbah, Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves. Two days let you add Asilah or Tetouan, and three days let you add Chefchaouen without rushing.
For the city, yes. With an early start you can see the coast in the morning and the medina and Kasbah in the afternoon. You need a vehicle for the coast, which is 14 km from the medina.
Yes. It is about two and a half hours each way, so leave around 8am to get six hours there. A night in Chefchaouen is even better if you can spare it.
Skip the coast and focus on the medina and the Kasbah on foot. A three to four hour walking tour covers the essentials.
Yes, mostly because of what is nearby. Tangier is the best base in northern Morocco, with Asilah, Tetouan and Chefchaouen all within reach for day trips.
