A licensed guide in Tangier costs from 40 euros per person for a private walk through the medina, up to 350 for a long day trip to Fes. Here is every price I charge, what each one includes, and why the free guide at the port gate usually ends up costing more.

People ask me the price before anything else, which is fair. Guide prices in Morocco are rarely published, and the ones that are often leave out the things you only discover on the day: museum tickets, the car, the “small contribution” at the end. So here is the whole list, in plain numbers.
I am a Tangier tour guide, so these are my own prices. They are per person for a private tour, meaning nobody else joins your group.

What You Are Actually Paying For

On driving tours, most of the price is the car and driver. The coast is 14 km from the medina.
The Free Guide Who Is Not Free
If you arrive without a booking, someone will offer to show you around. Sometimes it starts as friendly conversation, sometimes as a student who “just wants to practise English”. The price is vague or small, 50 or 100 dirhams.
The walk ends at a carpet shop, a spice stall or a “Berber cooperative”, where the guide earns a commission on anything you buy. Then comes the request for a tip on top. The total cost is usually far above a licensed guide’s fee.
Unlicensed guiding is not allowed in Morocco, and licensed guides carry an official card. If someone offers to guide you, asking to see it is completely normal. I have written a full guide on staying safe and relaxed in Tangier if this worries you.

Frequently Asked Questions
A licensed private guide costs from about 40 euros per person for a three to four hour walking tour. A full day with a car and driver costs around 75 euros, and day trips to Chefchaouen, Tetouan or Asilah around 150 euros per person.
For a first visit, yes. The medina has no signposts, the coast needs a vehicle, and a guide means nobody else approaches you to offer their services. If you only have a few hours and want the old town, a walking tour is the cheapest way to do it well.
Tips are appreciated but never required. The price you agree in advance covers the tour. If you were happy, a tip of around 10 percent is a generous thank you.
Usually because the real income comes from commissions in the shops they take you to. By the end of the walk, the total you spend is often higher than a licensed guide’s fee, and the tour is built around shopping rather than the city.
